One of our favorite itineraries:
Oregon was once the promised land of the 19th century pioneers. Today this beautiful state continues to deliver those promises. Within its boundaries, is an array of nearly every type of landscape for your discovery and pleasure. The rural areas are reminiscent of New England, with quaint covered bridges and charming old-world steepled churches. The mountain ranges are rolling like the Appalachians and are as rugged as the Rockies, with picturesque glacier peaks. Fertile valleys support diverse farming and have become well-known wine growing regions. The central and eastern parts of the state are filled with sagebrush, cowboys, and the high desert. The network of rivers is large and an important part of the economy. The coast offers sandy beaches, craggy coves, abundant sealife and good surfing. On our bikes we’ll explore Oregon’s “best”, giving you the perfect introduction to the state.
Plan to arrive in Portland no later than Monday. If you would like more time to discover this city of parks, museums, fabulous restaurants and a vibrant art scene, you may wish to arrive a day or two before the tour starts.
Monday, Portland. Arrival in the City of Roses. Portland is considered to be one of the most bike friendly cities in the nation. On or off the bike, there is a lot to see and do. Afternoon warm-up ride along the river bike path and the nearby West Hills. Welcome dinner tonight to meet your fellow cyclists.
Tuesday & Wednesday, Hood River. Our ride begins as we leave the city and follow the Columbia River eastward through the Columbia Gorge, a national scenic area that was carved by Ice Age floodwaters. Stop at 620-ft Multnomah Falls and its historic 1925 stone lodge. Wednesday’s route takes us to The Dalles and back, cycling on the new Columbia River bike path, which offers more stunning views of the river, waterfalls and geologic formations.
Thursday & Friday, Mt Hood. Bicycle the back roads through apple and pear orchards with a backdrop of forested hills and teasing views of snow-capped Mt. Hood. A stop at Lost Lake is a must, with its inviting shoreline and stunning reflection of the mountain. Historic Timberline Lodge was built completely by hand from local stone and timber in 1936. In July and August the meadows that surround the lodge burst into bloom with wildflowers. Hike one of the mountain trails right outside your door.
Saturday, Sisters. A thrilling downhill ride as we leave the mountain, biking toward cowboy country. We’ll pass through tall forests, changing to high desert sagebrush. Stop at Smith Rocks State Park, a popular climbing and hiking area. The small western town of Sisters is named after the Three Sisters mountains, which offer spectacular views in the distance.
Sunday & Monday, Rainbow. Our scenic route climbs the Cascade Mountain range and we pass through the largest lava flow in the continental United States. Two nights to enjoy the comforts of the Holiday Farm Resort. Situated directly on the banks of the McKenzie River it is favored by white-water rafters. You also have the option of hiking, horseback riding, bird watching, fishing or golfing at the nearby course.
Tuesday, Westfir. We bike the Aufderheidi Scenic Byway through miles of old-growth timber forests. As bike friendly as any road in Oregon it has been listed as one of the top ten places to bicycle in Oregon. In the tiny community of Westfir, we’ll cross the longest covered bridge in Oregon. It was built in 1945 by the local company.
Wednesday. After a leisurely breakfast we will transfer you to the nearby Eugene airport. We also have a transfer option back to the Portland airport.
